Welcome to the Vale of Berkeley Railway

Our focus is on the Sharpness branch line in Gloucestershire, built by the Severn & Wye Railway and later jointly operated by the GWR & LMS companies. Although it closed to passenger traffic in 1964, part of the branch is still occasionally used for freight traffic.

 

The Vale of Berkeley Railway's initial base was in the Old Engine House by the docks, where we set up an engineering facility to restore heritage locomotives, rolling stock and other items from a bygone era. Having obtained a lease from Network Rail for the original Sharpness freight sidings, we have vacated the Old Engine House and are developing the site we now refer to as Oldminster Sidings. As we establish new facilities there, we continue to work towards our long-term plan of regularly operating heritage trains along the Sharpness branch.
